What is hard water and why does it scale your pipes ?
Hard tap water contains a lot of lime, which is mostly calcium that is deposited in pipes. As a consequence the pipe diameters will decrease which may lead to blockage, especially in bent pipes. Heating coils in hot waters systems scale up and use up to 30% more energy than a heater that does not have scale buildup.
Lime causes malfunction of household appliances like dish washers, washing machine coffee-makers ,and water heaters.
Limescale can also cause a serious health problem. Legionella a deadly bacteria, loves scaled pipes. The lime surface in a water pipe is not flat, but very rough. Ideal conditions for growth of bacteria, for. ex., Legionella! These bacteria, on the one hand, find shelter protecting them from disinfection and, on the other hand, they are given food rich in calcium and magnesium being the constituents of the lime deposits.
What is Legionnaire's disease ? Legionnaires’ disease is caused by bacteria that belong to the family Legionellaceae. This family now includes 48 species and over 70 serogroups. Approximately half of these species have been implicated in human disease. Legionella pneumophila is responsible for approximately 90% of infections. Most cases are caused by L. pneumophila, serogroup 1. Legionella species are small (0.3 to 0.9 μm in width and approximately 2 μm in length) faintly staining Gram-negative rods with polar flagella (except L. oakridgensis). They generally appear as small coccobacilli in infected tissue or secretions. They are distinguished from other saccharolytic bacteria by their requirement for L-cysteine and iron salts for primary isolation on solid media and by their unique cellular fatty acids and ubiquinones.
